I think it's significant that when discussing Sam Harris's new book Dawkins says 'you have to assume that what matters is suffering [that] the goal of morality is to reduce the total amount of suffering.'
Since that assumption is a moral one his position is consistent with the 'autonomy of ethics' - and not with Sam's most extreme claim.
